Claire Tomalin, biographer of Charles Dickens, re-visits the inimitable author’s two trips to America on the 150th anniversary of his death, together with John Mullan, author of The Artful Dickens. Dickens’ travel book, American Notes, resulting from his trips, revealed his love/hate relationship with the continent, including the social reformer’s abhorrence of slavery.
