In-Store Signing with Chef Kevin Mitchell & J.E. Thompson

  • Buxton Books 160 King Street Charleston, SC, 29401 United States (map)

Buxton Books present a DOUBLE book signing Kevin Mitchell, South Carolina’s Chef Ambassador and co-author of Taste the State, and J.E. Thompson, author of Buccaneer’s Spit. There will be cake! WE REPEAT - THERE WILL BE CAKE!

ABOUT TASTE THE STATE:

“From the influence of 1920s fashion on asparagus growers to an heirloom watermelon lost and found, Taste the State abounds with surprising stories from South Carolina's singularly rich food tradition. Here, Kevin Mitchell and David S. Shields present engaging profiles of eighty-two of the state's most distinctive ingredients, such as Carolina Gold rice, Sea Island White Flint corn, and the cone-shaped Charleston Wakefield cabbage, and signature dishes, such as shrimp and grits, chicken bog, okra soup, Frogmore stew, and crab rice.”

ABOUT BUCCANEER’S SPIT:

In this middle-reader mystery, twelve-year-old Callie's parents send her to South Carolina alone for a spring break visit with her grandfather. Joined by a rambunctious Jack Russell Terrier and a friend with a secret of his own, she's set on revealing what the adults in her life are keeping from her. This STEM focused coming-of-age story features a girl/boy dynamic with a bit of pirate mystery and ecological danger thrown in. The adventure includes a prominent secondary character with dyslexia and is set in OpenDyslexic typeface. Perfect for high-low or reluctant readers and fans of The Goonies!

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:

Kevin Mitchell is the first black chef instructor at The Culinary Institute of Charleston. In 2020, he was named a South Carolina Chef Ambassador. David Shields is the chair of the Carolina Gold Rice Foundation and Carolina Distinguished Professor of the English Language and Literature Department at the University of South Carolina.

J. E. Thompson is the author of The Girl from Felony Bay along with a number of books for adults. He lives in Charleston, South Carolina, not too far from the bays and plantations that inspire the Felony Bay Mysteries.
