Documentary Series // Sisterhood SC Suffragist: The Grimke Sisters

  • Charleston Library Society 164 King Street Charleston, SC, 29401 United States (map)

Buxton Books is excited to be the booksellers for The Charleston Library Society as they host a screening of Sisterhood SC Suffragist: The Grimke Sisters (56 min). In conjunction with the screening, they will be welcoming producers Beryl Dakers and Betsy Newman to share additional insights and context on the making of the series as well as answer questions afterward.

Appropriate for Women’s History Month, CLS looks forward to sharing one of a three-part series that premiered during 2020, highlighting South Carolina Suffragists in celebration of the passing of the 19th amendment and the important role that SC had in the national movement. Although best known as fierce abolitionists, Sarah and Angelina Grimke were the first South Carolina Women to publicly advocate for women’s suffrage. The story traces the lives of the Grimke sisters and other SC voices in the struggle for women’s rights from the late 1830’s through the Civil War.
